I've recently been fixated on typical so/sx problems. However, I seem to come across money easily, am in good health, have plenty of time/resources for my interests/hobbies, etc., so I thought, "If only I was self-preservation first! Then I would be satisfied." But then I realized, maybe that wouldn't be the case. Maybe if I was sp first, I would have higher standards for my sp wants/needs, and whenever I secured a current sp want/need, I would just elevate my sp standards. That certainly seems to be the case with my so standards. Five years ago, I longingly dreamed of a certain job that I now scorn and consider my back-up plan. In my first year of grad school, all I wanted was to find a good group of friends, which I did, but shortly after, I began to really want a boyfriend. Do I really need a perfect boyfriend or to be at the absolute top of my career to be happy? Would they even make me happy, or would I just find more so stuff to want after I got them?
So my question for you is: can you ever be satisfied with what you have in your primary instinct? Are you currently satisfied with it? What do you imagine it would take for you to be satisfied with it? Have you noticed changes over time in what you think satisfaction would require; do these changes correspond to having achieved previous criteria for satisfaction?
(Outside of adopting a Buddhist mindset and shedding desire as a whole.)
