Conscious vs Unconscious Function

How does one actually determine if a function is conscious or unconscious - particularly if the function in question is strong? Would a conscious function be one whose use you are fully aware of? Meaning that you manipulate it knowingly, whatever your level of mastery and creative potential may be?

I would like an articulate and concise explanation of the difference.
