Tell me about yourself.
I'm kind of a boring person who's spending most of their time in their head. My interests seem to be rather "out there", so it's hard for me to find a common ground for a casual chat. I am on a journey of constant self-improval, which might turn out useful in the future. I don't know, maybe someone would say "wow, you can do X? I didn't even know" and that'd really lighten up my day.
What do you study or do for a living? How did you come to do that? What do you like or dislike about it?
I am working in an IT support company and it was kind of random that I even ended there. In the end I don't think it really matters which job you do, there will always be stuff you love and hate and even if it's a job that you hate more than you love, it'll only tune your self to be more appreciative when good things happen, so it balances itself out. My knowledge about IT is not as good as that of my peers and I only care to know about the things that I need to know to get the job done. I do like talking with customers and I can calm down even the angriest individual by carefully sympathizing and listening to them. My heart is with the people who call and not with my coworkers.
What are your values, and why?
Do not cause harm to other people. It's basic, but it gets the job done. I don't care if you are into drugs if you are a gambler or whatnot, I will be your friend regardless.
Life is about self-improvement. It doesn't matter what you do, only how you do it. I will help you look at life from an entirely new perspective. Only if you come to me and are willing to listen, though. I will not force my values onto you.
If you are not feeling well, I'll find a way to motivate you into thinking positively again.
What else do you do on a daily basis? What are your interests and hobbies? Why do you do them?
I like watching videos about things that interest me, which would be for example the video game I rarely play. I like shows that try to guess what I'm thinking and surprise me when something entirely different happens and catches me off-guard.
I like playing the guitar, but I'm not sure if I'm any good at it. I'm inconsistent with practicing.
As for hobbies, I like to play the occasional video game (currently it's a team-based shooter and I'm awful at it lol) and learn japanese. Why do I do that? Because I just happened to set my mind on it when I was watching a lot of anime. It got me into reading Manga in the raw format, so there's that. It also got me into teaching a friend and creating an (unsuccessful) youtube channel.
But really, the same me could have ended up with completely different interests, depending on what kinds of media I'd been exposed to.
I also happend to learn English randomly. Most stuff on the internet is in English, so I naturally learned the language while pursuing my other interests.
That said, my interests do not change and are rather limited, making it kind of hard to hold a conversation with strangers.
Describe your relations with family and friends. What do you like and dislike about them?
I cannot have a deep conversation with my parents, so I keep it short and brief only exchanging the latest news on what's going on.
My brother is smart and a successful business person. He thinks a lot like I do, but he's extremely efficient and goal-driven to achieve whatever he thinks he needs. It's inspirational. I don't have that kind of ambition, because I'm lacking in a goal that I really believe in.
I hate it when my friends constantly grab for my attention on random things. If it coincides with my interests (which is rarely the case), I can easily discuss the subject for multiple hours and passionately argue for the things I believe in.
What do you look for in friends? In romantic relationships?
Low maintenance. It's normal for me to ignore my friends for multiple months and then message them one day like nothing ever happened. I don't hold grudges and I like basically everyone. If you are being annoying though, I will ignore you and answer at a later time, when I feel like it. On the other hand I don't really hate anyone either and can get along with even the greatest social outcasts. I do not want my friends to meddle with my affairs and I will not do that either.
What conflicts have you encountered recently with other people? Why did they happen? Which kinds seem to happen on a regular basis?
I don't clash with people usually. We have this obnoxious narcisist coworker and I share my office with him. It took a while but I understand him now and get along with him just fine.
There was this one incident though. It was a fraud kind of thing. Some guy used my address to have me pay for the stuff they ordered. Once I figured that out with the company that he was stealing from, I decided to help them and did some silly private investigating. Thinking back, it was really peculiar. Anyways, the company told me to sue the guy, which I didn't want at that time and they assigned a collection company to get their money from me. It was the first time in a long time that my values were threatened. I spent multiple long evenings reading everything about the legal situation. I researched everything about the collection company as well and wrote a letter with a lot of disguised snark. I made it perfectly clear that I was right and won that dispute. I was ready to fight it out until the end, but unfortunately my argumentation convinced them to leave me alone, so nothing bad happened. If I had been a person of power and we were talking about a grander scale of things, my temper could have easily led to a world war.
How would your friends describe you?
Not sure, you would have to ask them yourself. I have been described as "too nice" before. It's easy for me to rationalize almost every decision I make, so in return it's easy for others to take advantage of me. I realize this, but I don't really mind and rationalize that I'm saving those "favors" for a rainy day, in order to pressure someone into doing something for me. In the end I'll probably never turn in those favors, but I do explore what could happen if I did in my head all the time.
What do people generally see as your strengths? What do you like about yourself?
I am stubborn and while my views are "absolute", they change every day. I'm very controversial. One second I'd be the most confident person about a subject that you've ever met and as soon as you agree to that, I start second-guessing myself.
I wish I'd learned the stuff that I know today sooner. I didn't have a great childhood and I was the target of bullying all throughout high school. I was constantly challenging stronger opponents despite knowing I could not win.
I like that I'm very conscious. Everything I do is done with purpose and intent. Whenever I catch myself drifting off into auto-pilot, I become very sloppy in the execution of even the most trivial tasks.
What are your weaknesses? What criticism do you often face from others? What do you dislike about yourself?
I'm a social outcast and the only way for me to get what I need is through making others feel pity for me. It's pathetic, but no one ever brought that up, so I might just be imagining things.
I am often (and rightfully so) accused of not listening. I can barely remember things that happened even just a couple of minutes ago. Unless I experience a concrete situation with another person, I'm unlikely to even remember their name. When I know that my coworkers are talking about stuff that I don't need to know and that I don't understand, I cannot force myself to listen. My job's my job. I'm lazy and I get accused of not showing enough ambition at work, which is totally true, because I only work to get what I need to live and do what I really want to do.
In what areas of life can you manage well on your own? In what areas of your life would you like help?
I'm doing fine being self-sufficient and planning out future endeavours. I can see what will work and what won't and am my own biggest critic. The easiest way to make me reconsider something is to agree with me.
I would like help in physical maintenance. Doing chores is a ... chore. It's hard for me to force myself into doing stuff that doesn't have a permanent solution.
What things do you find to be a chore? What things do you enjoy more than others?
Householding. Routine work. I enjoy thinking about how things are going to develop in the grand scheme of things and steering away from undesired outcomes way ahead in time.
What goals, aspirations, or plans do you have for the future? How did you come to have them?
I want to learn japanese and be good enough at it that even a native speaker wouldn't notice a difference. I want to prove that it is possible without having to live in Japan.
Then there's my youtube channel (targetted at a German audience) that I want to see grow. Currently it's not working at all and my friend and I are constantly working on it to "get it there". Given enough effort anything is possible.
I also want to be able to play my favorite songs on the guitar, but most of the time it isn't easy to obtain tabs for them, so I have to figure them out by ear, which is rather time-consuming.
If you had enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life without working, what would you do with your time?
Not much would change to be honest. I would fill the time I gained with new projects and new stuff that I want to learn.
What traits do you find endearing that others might dislike? What traits are considered positive/neutral by others but tend to annoy you?
I like it when others have ideas that kind of "fit in" like the last puzzle piece and give me a whole new perspective or a new absolute truth to go with. Surprise me and you've got me intrigued.
I'm not too fond of others getting involved emotionally with me and trying to close the distance. My heart is in a far away place and I only let my closest friends get anywhere near to that.
What kinds of things do you do to manage and/or beautify your environment (your room, your house, etc.)? What do you think of daily chores?
I had a couple of posters on my walls before. We did a paint job and I just didn't feel like hanging them up again. Things and material goods don't mean anything to me.
Daily chores are best post-poned and done in one fell swoop.
How do you behave around strangers?
Kind, service-oriented, positive, unbiased, distant
How do you react to conflict? What do you do if somebody insults or attacks you?
I listen first and then probably say something dumb to defend myself. I'll then have a bit of alone time and figure out their point, which is usually there, why would they insult or attack me otherwise?
I try to avoid conflict at all costs, generally, but I won't ever put myself below the other person, begging for forgiveness.
If they just need someone "to get off", I'm the guy. I understand and it's extremely hard for me to be mad at them, because I can rationalize enough reasons to think so.
If they start threatening or physically hurting me, I'll engage survival mode, which means running away and calling the police. It counts as hurting my values and I'm adamant about those.
What is one common misconception that people have? Explain why it is wrong.
I am a no-nonsense kind of person and the only misconception I can think of would them mistaking accommodation for weakness.
What did you do last Friday?
I don't remember. Nothing special, so probably just the usual.
If you are doing a video you can stop here or choose from the rest of the questions as you like.
If you are answering in writing, please answer ALL questions.
What is your biggest accomplishment?
Learning to play the guitar within one month, proving that anything is possible with enough effort. Take that with a grain of salt, just like all my other achievements, because those are really personal and I'm not sure that others would value them as highly.
What is something you regret?
I did a bunch of dumb stuff, but nothing comes to mind in particular.
Who do you admire, and why?
Goal-driven people with a vision. If you're not living like a drone, I'll probably admire you.
What's been on your mind? Has anything been worrying or concerning you? What problems have you encountered lately?
Thought about attending university again. I can see a path to unhappiness which involves me working my ass off for 10 years to pay off my debts. I'm not sure I am ready for the commitment.
What are your religious or spiritual beliefs and why do you hold them?
Do not hurt others and we're cool. Extreme selfish behaviour I do not condone. I won't tell it to your face, though, rather looking for indirect ways to make you change your ways.
What are your political beliefs, and why? To what extent do you care about politics?
Not interested that much. I think people are very similar in their decision-making at least, despite every person being a unique individual. That means, that if you have a certain opinion on something, there's a whole bunch of other people who think exactly as you do. That is enough reason to participate in votes and reasonably expect things to change towards accommodating your views.
I don't feel like there's a large group of people representing my values, so them voting alongside me would probably not be enough to make a difference. Therefore I don't vote.
Would you ever be interested in starting a business? Why or why not? What role would you play in it? What kind of business would it be?
Yes. I'm not the kind of guy to go "all-in" on it, though. I'd do it in my free time and try to imagine how things would turn out. Being self-sufficient is the most efficient if you're not working under someone else. A business would allow me to allocate less time to mundane work and more time to stuff I care about. I'd be the CEO and it would be a business that is not going for maximum profits, but instead for the highest money/effort ratio possible. Not trying to get rich.
What kind of work environment do you prefer? What do you look for in a job?
Independence is important to me. Cut the crap and get to the point. I hate pointless meetings and I hate long break times. I just want to get it over with, so I can go home. If I can work hard and walk out of the office earlier, I'll do that.
What is or was your favorite school subject and why?
English, I had a lot of exposure to it due to my brother introducing me to English shows and subtitled Anime.
How do you approach responsibility? What do you tend to expect of others?
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I know that I'm not very reliable with my promises, so I don't expect anything of others either. I try to avoid making promises now.
Where did you go on your most recent vacation? What did you do there? How did you like it and why?
It was an Anime convention. Some of the performances were very cringy, but everyone tried their best and that is good enough for me. It was pretty chill, but I'm not used to that much social exposure, so I was glad once we were heading back home.
What were you like as a kid? How have you changed since you were a child?
Apparently, I was very aggressive with everyone and didn't understand social norms at all. I'm sure I was the perfect victim for everyone else to bully. Jerks.
I spent a lot of time alone, playing on my gameboy or writing code on a scientific calculator. It was intriguing to me and my brother showed me how to do it. I experimented a lot with it and could write a bunch of cool games. It was also very useful to store information for tests if you catch my drift.
What was your high school experience like?
It was awful and I hated everyone except a 2 guys from a completely different class. Being the bully victim isn't fun. My outlook changed a lot from back then and it wouldn't happen again.
Talk about a significant event from your life.
My brother accidentally cut my middle finger with a huge pair of scissors. That was unfortunate. I wasn't mad at him, because it wasn't his fault. He kept apologizing while we were on our way to the hospital I think. In the hospital the doctors let me watch them operating on the open wound. It was pretty interesting.
Do you like kids? Why or why not?
Yes, I love kids. They actually listen to me, which adults don't have time for. And it's fun to troll them with sarcasm. I was told I was so believable and enthusiastic about a child's book about horses with my constant remarks like "that horse is red, but oh no, that one over there is grey. Wow, amazing! I wonder what happens next."
As long as the kids are having fun, it's all good.
If you were to raise a child, what would be your main concerns, what measures would you take, and why?
I'd raise my child to question my very being and everything I do. Children say what they think, disregarding social norms, so their input is very valuable to me.
I'd teach my child to not cause problems for others and think before they speak.
Ever feel stuck in a rut? If yes, describe the causes and your reaction to it.
Yes, that happened. Being as introverted as I am, I was stuck in a loop for like almost 2 years. Just acting on auto-pilot all day and trying to figure out an answer to a problem that had none. Thinking back, it's very useful to take time off of something if it's not working out. Many problems solve themselves.
How do you see other people as a whole? What do you consider a prevalent social problem? Name one.
I think everyone is great and each has their own motivations. It's very hard for me to critize someone, because of all the reasons that stand behind their behaviour that they cannot influence.
Lack of motivation is a prevalent social problem. "Gamers" my age don't even play games anymore, but rather watch the "highs" of other players on youtube. Getting to the good stuff without effort is the motto of today's society, which kind of defeats the purpose of life.
What do you do if you're not getting what you want? What approach do you use?
I'd probably think of very intricate plans or "dirty ways" to get what I want and end up not using any of them, because harmony is too important to me. I think I'd just run away and do something else if it's not working out. If it's not people-related, I'd work hard to achieve what I want.
Are you comfortable taking leadership roles? In what areas? Why or why not?
I'm my life's boss. Good enough for me. I understand the value of leadership, because there are people out there with lots of ideas, each equally good. Most of the time it doesn't really matter what you decide on, you just need someone to decide. I can rationalize any decision afterwards to make me feel good about myself.
How often do you get angry? What kinds of things make you angry?
Almost never. Being not good enough at a video game makes me angry. It's hard for me to not be competitive, but my friend readily points it out whenever I'm getting too pissy, so it never manifests over long periods of time.
What is the best thing that happened to you during the past week?
I got admitted ot my univerity. That's pretty good. I also talked about meaningful stuff with my brother for 3 hours on the phone. That happens like once every couple of years, so it's precious.
What is the worst thing that happened to you during the past week?
The youtube channel is not working out at all, despite our efforts. Kind of a bummer and I don't want it to stay that way.
What is the purpose of life? What do you find personally meaningful in life?
Self-actualization. Set your mind on doing something and work to get there. Once you're there, start over. Repeat a couple of times until and meet your new best friend "the mid-life crisis". I'm only 28, so there's still ways to go until then.
Everything is as meaningful as the amount of effort you put into it. If you are spending a lot of time on something and it doesn't work out, it's still worthwhile. The result of labor is but an extrinsic reward. Your motivation is the key to true happiness.
I don't expect anything and feel happy when something exceeds my expectations. As delusional as it may be, it works out pretty well.
What is the most interesting place you have been, and why?
I didn't find any of the places I visited to be particularly interesting.
How do you dress or manage your appearance?
I'm wearing shirts with custom imprints. Everything else I wear is functional. I don't spend a lot of time on appearance, basically.
Do you like surprises?
Yes and no. Surprise me with an idea and I'm happy. Surprise me with a sudden visit and I'm going to hate you for the rest of the day.
Is there anything else important about you that we should know?
I am grateful that you took the time to read all of this stuff. It ended up going far deeper than I anticipated. I tried to make it a bit more entertaining to read, because I don't know if I would read such a massive wall of information myself.
