Do you think Hysterical Literature is art or porn or both? Is it just hot or a thought provoking feminist art experiment. (Not to mention a fun idea to try at home.)
This article might help get the conversation started. I find it both erotic and arousing as well as mysterious. I wanted to find out the motivation and intention and history of the project, so after watching 4 sessions, I turned to the essays.. I think this 'selfie art' can either be a way to set yourself free from the social constructs of society that try to control what is allowable in the realm of female pleasure and sexuality portrayed in media, conversation, art etc.; or it may also be another source for a self-conscious need for attention, and a shame/addiction cycle. Does subtly hidden sharing of what is usually seen as private and intimate allow them to own their voice and be rid of shame? Or is it another cry for attention and desirability and worthiness while turning the power over to the audience because once you've exposed yourself, it's now in their hands? I think the answer is participant specific. Perhaps they only know the answer in hindsight.
